For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life.
Proverbs 6:23, ESV
The Law is meant to be a protector and guide. This is true with the law in general. We are given speed limits to protect those driving and others who may be impacted by the actions of a driver. We are given laws to protect our assets, our lives, our health, and our reputations. No one likes to have their lives negatively impacted by anything, nor is the suffering of others something that is enjoyed by the majority of society. When things become disordered in society, we see the effects on communities, commerce, and the well-being of our families. God’s Laws are ordered and are not meant to destroy our enjoyment of life, but to enhance our lives by focusing our hearts on things that are of true value and life-giving. As we walk in the Lord’s commands, we are given a light to lead us away from the paths of darkness and into God’s glorious peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
