So you are no longer a slave, but a son. And if you are a son, then you are also an heir of God through Christ.

Galatians 4:7, EHV

Many of us like to believe we are free. To believe we have free will is a sign of this struggle; this is why many like to believe that we can choose to follow Christ. Yet, when faced with reality, what do we so often choose? Do we choose God? This is not to make anyone feel guilty, but it is a reality that fills so much of our lives. We are a bound people. That is the slavery we find ourselves in and the slavery which Christ frees us. The gift of Jesus is that He purchased us through His sacrifice on the Cross from the slaveholder, Sin. We are then no longer slaves to Sin, but slaves of Christ. It is that happy exchange that our Lord purchased for us and gives to us through the remaining days of our lives. This begins as we are brought to the waters of Baptism but continues throughout our lives as we struggle with the calling of Sin, which constantly seeks to tempt us away from our Lord. The reality of this struggle is that our Lord knows it already and has given us a way out. He doesn’t let us go so easily, but instead, He fights for us against the tempter and is always calling us to Himself. The promise He offers for us all is that in our slavery, we will be released and be made an heir to the kingdom in which lies the promise of our eternal life and our eternal peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
