But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone.
Galatians 1:15–16, ESV
Two things that Paul reveals here are notable. First, his realization that he had been set apart by God from the womb and, second, he did not seek out the approval of any person but sought guidance from God and was in prayer about his calling. Paul did not run to the Apostles. He ran to God. God is not bound by a building or a group of people, but He calls us wherever He desires and places in His chosen a calling. So often, we can become so caught up in the approval of others that we may miss our calling or be steered away from doing that which God desires if it does not meet a certain agenda. This does not mean that Paul didn’t test the calling. I would be confident he went to the Bible, what we would call the Old Testament, to ensure he was faithful in his actions. God will not call us to do anything contrary to His nature. Since we now have the full revelation given to us in the New Testament, we, too, can test all callings placed on our hearts to discern whether they are from God or something else. Over time, we know, Paul did come to others but was careful in his steps to not be misguided, as should we. Our eyes should first look to our Lord and His Word in our callings and seek His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
