And looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
Mark 10:21, LSB
What is the one thing that you love the most in this world? Are you willing to let it go for the sake of Christ? This question is presented to this young man and to each of us who profess to be Christ's followers. We are called to give all of ourselves and lay everything before the Lord. Those very things that you place high in your life are the things that the devil and his minions will attack to cause doubt and bring each follower of Christ to the point of denying the faith. Satan cannot make us do anything, but his temptations can be very pointed. One only needs to read Job to understand the spiritual battle going on. For the rich, young man we find his attachment to the great number of possessions he had been blessed with in life which stood before him following Jesus. We can criticize the rich, young ruler because we believe that is easy, but it wasn’t about his wealth, but his heart. We can know where another’s heart lies by what they are willing to let go of. As the adage goes, “Talk is cheap.” A man willing to give up wealth, risk his life and reputation, and stand firm in his beliefs shows true devotion and a character that will not be dissuaded by the challenges the world will present. God seeks that devotion from us for Him and Jesus was challenging this young man and all followers to give all over to Him, trusting in Him, and in Him alone find peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
