Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
Mark 10:21–22, NKJV
Many of the disciples were confused at this interaction, and it continues to be difficult for us today. The man had a great amount of wealth and could have been a great benefactor for the disciples to help them in their mission. The journey for the disciples and Jesus would have been easier if they had someone who could regularly get them supplies and lodging. Feeding the many hungry souls they would encounter would have been easier and would have easily increased their support and following also. Jesus would have known these thoughts also, but our faith is not meant to be reliant on a great benefactor. Our faith is centered on Jesus as the great benefactor, pointing us to the Father and giving us the Holy Spirit. It is through Him and Him alone that we find our salvation, and in Him alone can we find our peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
