Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
Matthew 19:21, LSB
Have you ever thought about the word “possession”? It can either be something that belongs to a person or a state of being under the control of a demonic entity. In this account of Jesus and the rich, young man who came with a question about how one gains eternal life. The first issue is the question, “What shall I do that I may have eternal life?” Eternal life with our Lord is not something we earn, but are given. Our Lord chooses us and He calls us away from being caught up in worldly things. The difficulty is that when one is used to possessing a lot, it quickly becomes the center of who they are and they may even think that they can possess God’s promises. God’s promises become obligations of God and owed to them. In Christ, we are called away from this thinking and called to something greater as He draws us away from worldly thinking that possesses our souls and into the freedom of His promises which unlock the chains that seek to keep us bound in the lies of this world and into the peace of our Lord.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
