Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn Your commandments.
Psalm 119:73, ESV
A common statement many make when talking about the Bible is how difficult it is to read and understand. This is why we are to pray before we read and study the Scriptures. We ask the Holy Spirit to open His Word to us and give us insight into what God is saying and what He desires of us. It is the power of the inspired Word of God, which is infallible and inerrant, though it was penned by fallible men. It is infallible and inerrant because of God, who put within the writers the inspiration to write His words that He was writing upon their hearts. He does this work still within us as we pray for Him to give us understanding prior to our opening of His Word. As we pray, God works within us and will shed light into our hearts and souls on the calling He is placing upon us. It is through His calling that we can carry out His work and lead others into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
