Like a city that is broken into and without a wall, is a man without restraint over his spirit.
Proverbs 25:28, LSB
Who’s in charge of your life? Most people may not think too much about this in life, especially in a world that likes to divide and develop groups of oppressors and the oppressed, perpetrators and victims, and so on. We can either blame others for our lack of self-control or blame the one who is out of control for not getting a handle on the issues surrounding them. The issue isn’t that we aren’t controlling ourselves, but that we are the ones in charge. I once read a bumper sticker that read, “Jesus is my co-pilot.” Though it sounds nice if that is true in your life, then you are in the wrong seat. As we submit ourselves to God’s reign in our lives, the Holy Spirit will guide us and protect us. We are called to give the control of our lives to our Lord, and He will restrain us from doing those things that would otherwise lead us down dark paths. The more our Lord guides our spirit, the less hold sin has upon us and the greater we may walk with our Lord and in His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
