“I glorified You on the earth, having finished the work which You have given Me to do.”

John 17:4, LSB

Jesus’ work is complete. Our salvation is fulfilled. When we receive the gift through our Baptism and fully place our trust in the promises given us by Jesus Christ there is nothing else, we must do for our salvation. Many struggle with this reality and some think that makes our way of life insignificant. What many misunderstand, however, is the reception of the gift causes a transformation in the receiver. As the promises of Christ unfold in your heart, your heart changes. It is not an action that we perform on ourselves, but an action that Christ performs in us. In our Lord, we receive the Holy Spirit as our counselor, our guide. He continues to bring change in our hearts that leads us closer and closer to our Lord. A greater hunger for the Word will develop. Our perspective will be changed. Our desires will be redirected. This does not mean that we won’t struggle, and the sins of the past won’t continually attempt to take hold in our lives, but our Lord does not leave us on our own. Sin will attempt to rob us of this gift, but our Lord always offers us an exit strategy. Sin will be like a lion crouching to devour and destroy, but our Lord is always near at hand to be our shield as we fully place our reliance on Him and our relationship with Him. We do not have to perfect ourselves because our Lord is already completing that work in us and in this, we may find our peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
