But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.”
Acts 5:29, ESV
When confronted by the religious leaders about the proclamation of the Gospel, the Apostles' reply was not glib but straightforward. God’s authority was first for them, and the same is meant to be true for us. We live in constant tension with the world and our faith. It has always been this way. We saw this as Christianity gained broader acceptance and power as God raised voices to bring correction and were punished by those in authority, yet this is what we are called to do. Not with disrespect, but with regard for God and His Word. It is the tension that is meant to drive us in our living as we seek to remain faithful in our walk and be a witness to those who do not know Him. It isn’t about us being right, but about bringing others into the light of our Lord and teaching the Word of God faithfully and with purpose as we seek to be a light that leads others into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
