Then Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go, do as you have said, but make me a little bread cake from it first and bring it out to me, and afterward you may make one for yourself and for your son.”
1 Kings 17:13, LSB
I could imagine the thoughts of this woman who was approached by Elijah and the boldness of his request. Despite the reality of her limited resources, she was moved to trust the man of God. She did as Elijah requested and was blessed. God asks the same of us in all circumstances. First, we are to look to Him for guidance in our actions and then trust in doing what He places upon our hearts to do. Some things are easier than others. This doesn’t mean that our wants will be fulfilled, but our needs will be met as our Lord desires to meet them. She trusted in the words of the man of God, and her life, as well as the life of her son, were spared in a time of famine. God does great things in times of need, when we turn to Him and trust in His mercy and care. He refocuses our hearts and helps us to rest in Him. At times, He calls us to fully step out in faith when we see no path, and He will lead us into a place of His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
