“For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
Matthew 8:9, ESV
What authority do we have? In our lives, we find ourselves under the authority of another, whether it be a parent, a boss, a client or customer, our government, or law enforcement. Authority is always there, but our Lord wants us to first understand that we are under His authority and that God has authority over all of creation. God is not answerable to us, but we are answerable to Him. It isn’t that He wants to hold a tyrannical rule over us; in fact, if we know the Word, we will find that our God is benevolent. His lovingkindness is never-ending. His mercy is enduring. When we understand His authority, we can clearly live out His authority in how we are with others and exercise this authority to bring others into Him and know His authority in their lives, also. The power of a word is clear when we understand our role in the faith, just as the Centurion understood His authority. He painted a perfect picture for us to understand the authority of our God. Let us know God’s handiwork, understand His authority over us, and know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
