And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who draws near to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

Hebrews 11:6, LSB

Some people like to approach God as if He is an imaginary friend, especially in times of need. It’s similar to those moments in a sitcom when there is a tragedy and a person who has shown no faith comes to prayer and says, “God, if you exist, please help my loved one.” Now God may do as requested, but that is not faith and, usually, doesn’t build an abiding faith in the person who prays such a prayer which is really just an ultimatum. If the healing comes, they go on with their lives as before; if not, it’s God’s fault, and they move on. Faith is a gift given to us by God by faith we walk in the confidence of His being and know that we are His. For us to help those without faith, we are called to come alongside them in struggles and pray with and for them. A faithful follower approaches God easily because we know our Father and the sacrifice of the Son given for us all as revealed by the Holy Spirit. We have the confidence that He hears our prayers and knows our needs. In this confidence, we know He will answer and ask that our prayers align with His will. In faith, we know our prayers are pleasing because He has asked us to pray. In faith, we know His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
