“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.”
Matthew 7:21, LSB
The use of God’s name is not a charm or incantation. We can’t fool God. To call upon the name of the Lord comes from the heart of one who realizes that he has nothing to offer but a contrite heart. There will be those who will use the name of God inappropriately, but God always knows our hearts. There will be those who will try to hedge their bets by acting as though they believe, but their intentions will be uncovered with a little curiosity. If a person’s heart is with another god, the truth cannot be hidden from our Lord, and no amount of fine words will change that reality. The power of Christ is shown through humbled hearts. The Bible tells us that one day everyone will know that Jesus is Lord, but not everyone will enter the kingdom because simple knowledge does not create belief. Belief comes from a heart drawn to our Lord by the Holy Spirit. So, let us be faithful and proclaim His glory so those whose hearts are being called will come to know Christ’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
