When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank.
Exodus 2:3, ESV
Being a follower of the one, true God does not come without risk. Jochebed, Moses’ mother, faced great risk keeping him hidden for so long and then took a risk by putting him in a waterproof basket on the water in hopes he would find salvation at the hands of an Egyptian. Our Lord offered a path and through this act provided a way of salvation for God’s chosen people, Israel, in the mini-Ark created to save the one who would lead His people to the promised land. The power of this act was not fully understood at the time, but as is often the case, God had already put all things into motion. This points us to the saving act of our Lord as we see the story of God’s people unfold that points us to the one who would lead us into the promised Kingdom and restore us in our Lord as the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth, from the line of David who would take away all our sins. We don’t often see how our Lord plans to bless us, but we can be certain of His providence when we trust in Him and His word and know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
