“I put My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth.”
Genesis 9:13, LSB
The rainbow. A symbol of hope for the world. Given to us by God to signify His mercy and grace and the promise that never again would He cover the earth with floodwaters. The earth would never face such devastation as it did for over a year at the time of Noah and his family. God says the reminder is for Him, but for us, we can look up to a rainbow in the sky and see grace. The reality of our world is we are probably not any better than those who were taken in the Great Flood. We can look to the earth and see the remnants of the Great Flood when we see trees growing in places where there are no other trees or the uniform rock layers we find across the globe. We see God’s fingerprints in all creation and know that despite all the evil we see, our Lord is in control. We can find peace knowing that He cares for us as we can be reminded through something as simple as a natural rainbow. As the storms rage, we can know with confidence the end will come as the bows of that rainbow break through the light of the sun. Our Lord desires us to be calm when we are fearful as we remember His promise and know the forgiveness He has brought to the world through our Lord, Jesus Christ. In this season of Advent, as we remember the birth of our Lord, let us look ahead to His return, and may His peace rest upon us all.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
