Romans 8:28

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.

Romans 8:28, LSB

These words can be hard to hear when in the midst of a struggle, but this is where context needs to be understood. This does not mean that when you believe in God and trust His Word nothing evil will ever befall you. Paul was not saying this, nor has God inspired anyone to believe this. One need only read the Bible to know that this is true. God has and does use negative circumstances to shine out His glory. When the Father allowed for the crucifixion of His Son, we see this at work. The beatings of our Lord Jesus Christ, the false accusations raised against Him, the mockery of our Lord, and the eventual crucifixion were not good things they were all very evil and dark things, but these things were necessary for us and God’s love was put on full display on the Cross and in our Lord Jesus Christ’s resurrection and eventual ascension. The end result did not make evil good, but it made that which was meant for evil into something good. This is how God works. We cannot undermine God, but we can undermine ourselves and the work of the evil one. This is the promise of God. This does not mean that the suffering of a saint will end, but others may come to know our Lord through their suffering. As we face anything in life, it is good for us to look to God and seek His purposes so we may know His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
