Even in the matter of the envoys of the rulers of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the miraculous sign that had happened in the land, God left him alone only to test him, that He might know all that was in his heart.
2 Chronicles 32:31, LSB
King Hezekiah is a great example of the fickleness of faithfulness. When things were good, he seemed to forget who blessed him, and his pride got in his way. God had blessed Hezekiah with victories and had extended his life by fifteen years. What did Hezekiah do with these? He became proud and forgot God. In the fifteen years of his life, this faithful king would raise an heir who would undo much of what he had done in his life to glorify God and would help bring the beginning of the end of the kingdom of Judah and the fall of Jerusalem. Is this not common among humanity? How quickly we can forget the giver of our blessings and set God aside in our lives. God’s testing of Hezekiah further proved the broken nature of Hezekiah. Unlike Job, there wasn’t a great humbling of Hezekiah when it was revealed to him the events that would occur after his reign. There was no great warning given to his son or the people of Jerusalem and Judah. In our times of testing, let us have true mettle in our faith and be drawn closer to you in how we shine out your light so we find no comfort in our peace alone, but seek out your glorious peace to be revealed to all with whom you bring into our lives.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
