Love is patient. Love is kind. Love does not envy. It does not brag. It is not arrogant. It does not behave indecently. It is not selfish. It is not irritable. It does not keep a record of wrongs.
1 Corinthians 13:4–5, EHV
I remember the news cycle about the armed man who entered an Amish school in Pennsylvania and molested and killed the young girls he held hostage for hours. The most remarkable memory I hold of that event is when the parents of the deceased girls visited the parents of the man and forgave them for what their son did. Many could not believe that these parents could do such a thing, and it meant the world to the parents who were grieving and ashamed that the child they had raised could do such a horrendous act. This is the love that God gives and wants us to know. God the Father forgave us through the death of His Son. The way Jesus was treated was horrific, yet the last words He breathed were, “Forgive them.” This is the love our Father has for us and the Son showed for us as He suffered at our hands. When we confess our sins, we are confessing to our Lord that we know His forgiveness is real, and we can be confident that the forgiveness is already given to us. To question His forgiveness is to question His sacrifice for us. As we walk out our Lord’s love, we find that many of the worldly vices will slip away, and we can let go of our hurts and our pains because we are walking in His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
