An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.

Proverbs 31:10–11, ESV

Outside of the gift of salvation given to us through Jesus Christ, one of the greatest gifts from God is a good spouse. Marriage is meant to be a blessed union of a man and a woman that reflects the relationship of our Lord. As the writer describes a good wife here, we find a reflection on what it means to be a good husband who can receive such a wife. The pairing is not accidental. God desires husbands and wives to love and care for one another, with the ultimate goal of raising strong families that will keep their focus on faithful living. Strong marriages are the backbone of a good society and a healthy social order within communities. When the family breaks down, we find disorder and societal breakdown. We see the impacts of this within our world, and God knew and placed these thoughts in the head and hands of the writer to call us back to Himself and seek to remain on the journey focused on Christ and a return to healthy order. The Bible is rife with examples of this disorder and the impacts, but our Lord continues to call us to Himself and to live lives that will create such homes to restore our communities and lead more into His glorious peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
