If we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His Word is not in us.
1 John 1:10, ESV
Growing up, I remember this line as it was said every Sunday. It is a good reminder that we are not without sin. We sin every day. God, however, in His faithfulness, forgives us. It’s not our work. Personally, this has been something that has given me hope. Not that I sin, but that God forgives me and loves me. He doesn’t do this because He must, but it is in His nature to forgive those whom He has chosen. How do we know we are chosen? God has given us the ability to confess that He is Lord and has opened our eyes to recognize our sin and changed our hearts to be repentant of it. There is no sense of self-justification. God doesn’t leave that door open for us because no one can keep His Law perfectly. This is why He came incarnate in Jesus Christ to take the Law fully onto Himself and remove the stain of sin from His chosen. It is this truth that we may walk comfortably in His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
