Revelation 2:7

‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God.’

Revelation 2:7, LSB

Throughout Scripture, God has been calling us to faithfulness. These words remind us of the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were never barred from eating the fruit from the Tree of Life, yet they never consumed its promise. How often do we miss out on the promise because our focus is on something different? How often does the forbidden appeal to us more than all that which is free for our taking? It is the struggle we live through, but our Lord is calling us to faithfulness and is showing us the prize for our steadfastness. As we remain faithful to Christ, our reward will remain. The difficulty is our humanity wants more, and we are not content to wait for something better. We like immediate satisfaction. We like short-term pleasure. We can look to all the prophets throughout the Old Testament and see how merciful our Lord is as He continually calls His people back, yet they continue to turn away and chase after false gods. It is easier to fit in than to stand set apart from the world. We don’t want to be the odd man out or appear ignorant to the world. We cringe when asked about what we believe by some because we don’t want to be mocked in our belief in the Bible because of the new idol our world has named “Science.” Yet, we, who believe, know that the real pursuit of knowledge begins with God and our faithful trust in His Word and His promises. It is in these Words, “He who has an ear, let him hear” the truth is opened and the promise of His peace is revealed.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
