“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate, that He may be with you forever; the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him. You know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.”
John 14:16–17, LSB
Jesus promised His disciples that He would not leave them to fend for the faith on their own. He gives us this promise also. Like Jiminy Cricket for Pinocchio, the Holy Spirit is our guide to lead us. He will either guide us to places and opportunities to share the Gospel or lead us away from those things that will not be glorifying to Him. It is about our listening and seeking His guidance. We can ignore Him. We can try to negotiate with Him. This we do at our peril. The more we harden our hearts to the urgings of the Holy Spirit, the less peace we will know in our lives. Once within us, we are promised, the Holy Spirit will never leave us. Yet, like Jonah, if we seek to go our own way, we may find ourselves with greater struggle and a heart that is hardened in such a way that we may miss out on witnessing great blessings. The power of the Holy Spirit is He is given to open our eyes and our hearts to know Him more fully and help us to better experience His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
