If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1 John 1:8, ESV
To acknowledge we have sin within us is not the same as purposefully sinning. All of us have sinned and will continue to sin; that is what we acknowledge and are called to seek forgiveness for doing. This is far different than going out with the mind to commit sin, knowing that forgiveness will be given later when we confess our sin and ask for forgiveness. Willfully sinning is a total act of rebellion and a mockery of our Lord Jesus Christ, who died on the Cross for that sin. Sin occurs easily enough in our lives without our seeking it out. Actively seeking to sin shows a sense of unbelief. If we failed to follow a sign that warned us of imminent danger and possible death, it would be foolish for us to ignore it. Yet, there are those who ignore the warning about the cost of sin and leave loved ones to pick up the pieces and the grief left behind. Instead, our Lord calls us to confess and be freed from sin, so we may confidently enter into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
