Deuteronomy 15:11

Since there will never cease to be poor people in the land, I command you, open up your hand to your brother in your land, to the afflicted and the poor among you.

Deuteronomy 15:11, EHV

Poverty and hunger are a part of our fallen creation. God reminds the people of this through Moses before they enter the Promised Land, and Jesus speaks of this with His disciples as He is being anointed with the expensive perfume. Need and lack are signs of the sin in our world, where abundance and lack coexist. As followers of Christ, we are called to be mindful of this and generous in giving aid to our brothers and sisters in Christ. Feeding the bodies of those who are hungry while feeding their souls with the Word and promises of our Lord. The reality of poverty isn’t just a physical reality, but a spiritual reality. An impoverished mind leads to an impoverished soul, causing despair and a loss of hope, but a mind focused on Christ is uplifted and will find that they have all they need. As Christians, let us shine as a beacon of hope and hold out our Lord and His promises to those who cry out, leading them into His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
