Oh, may my ways be established to keep Your statutes! Then I shall not be ashamed when I look upon all Your commandments.
Psalm 119:5–6, LSB
It’s easy to tell when a child has done something that they know was wrong, but they don’t want to face it. This never fully goes away. It is the natural response to the realization of sin that stems from the garden when Adam and Eve first hid themselves when they heard God’s voice. The psalmist points to this reality as he admits the difficulties that arise when we break God’s laws or go against His will. Our spirits know it, and our relationship with God is damaged. Yet, in Christ, we can confidently know His forgiveness. Even so, we struggle against the feelings that are created in us prior to confessing things to our Lord and receiving His forgiveness. The distance in our spirit that a breach makes, but our Lord desires our hearts to be turned toward Him and our prayers to ease us of fear as He seeks to bring us ever deeper into His peace and seeks to keep us clearly from the paths of darkness and into His glorious light.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
