But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will boast in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

2 Corinthians 12:9, MEV

When we are plagued with illness or injuries that lay us up and we feel helpless, it can often make us feel worthless. Paul knew suffering and struggle. He had what he described as a “thorn in his flesh,” and repeatedly asked God to relieve Him of it. These are the words our Lord gave him. The question isn’t what we can do for God, but what can God do through us? In our weakness, our Lord desires for us to know that He can shine out greatly. It's not that He wants us to suffer, but we will suffer. It’s not the suffering we should focus on, but how God can use us when we know we cannot do anything through our own power. It is all done by Him through us. Jesus is not saying, “Give up,” but “Give in.” When we let God do His work within us instead of feeling like it is all dependent on us, we can see His miracles and shine out His glory. Oftentimes, our Lord is just telling us to get out of the way. As we place our reliance more on God and seek to do things to His glory, we will find that the work is more fulfilling because we are submitting to the master. Our Lord and master doesn’t want us to suffer needlessly, and often our suffering is from things we have tried to do on our own. As the adage goes, “Let go and let God,” there we will find His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
