Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.
Ephesians 4:26–27, ESV
We will become angry when people hurt us or betray us. Paul is reminding us of this reality and the dangers it brings. We mustn’t let anger rule in our hearts. This is how the devil can work in us as we become angry, and it consumes and creates division. It sets in our hearts and creates bitterness, resentment, and hatred. Forgiveness is a gift God has given us not only for the wrongs we do and need forgiveness for, but also to alleviate ourselves of anger and hurt against another when they do wrong against us. God desires for us to ask for forgiveness quickly, but also to forgive much more quickly. Forgiveness is not excusing the wrong and saying that it is OK, but letting the wrong be removed from our spirit. As we let go of anger and hurt, we find our relationship with God strengthens, and our relationships with others are broader and deeper. In all of this, we are given the boldness to proclaim God’s glory and find rest in His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
