Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

Romans 8:26, ESV

Witnessing a great tragedy can knock us speechless. Paul had witnessed much in His time and knew pain and loss. There wasn’t a Christian in that time that didn’t. These words are hope. When the words cannot come because the pain is too great, we know that our prayers are still heard. Our prayers need not be audible words, but an outpouring of anguish from the heart with the Holy Spirit bearing us up in His embrace. Our groanings are different for us in faith because they do not come out of a sense of hopelessness. We never lose hope. We carry the promise of our Lord and His presence with us. God doesn’t abandon us. As we cry out and the tears flood down our face, we can be lifted by our Lord to carry on and stand again. We are made strong not by our own ability, but by our Lord who has taken up residence in the recesses of our hearts and keeps the walls from falling in as the storms of pain crash against its walls. In Christ, we are never forgotten and in our faith we will never lose hope as our Lord brings us His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
