Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.
Proverbs 13:12, ESV
Most people know the longing as we await the arrival of a loved one who has been away, how the heart aches in anticipation, and the countdown to their arrival. If something happens that delays that arrival, the disappointment can be overwhelming, but when it happens, the joy is even greater! In Christ, we must not be set in anticipation but walk in the awareness of His salvation given to us. Our hope is secured in Him, and we need not fear that it will not be there for us. When we hear His promises, we hear they are for us. We are freed in the eternal hope given to us through Christ as we see the tree of life before us in the promises of our Lord. We need not chase after false hope as so many have in the past to cling to this life, but know the next that awaits us is much greater and eternal. Our Lord Jesus Christ stands ever before us and is always there to carry us when we falter. His promises are the fruit that brings us into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
