So they went in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. And when they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child.
Luke 2:16–17, LSB
Upon hearing the message of the angels, the shepherds left their posts to see the event that had been told to them. This is the message of our Lord and the message of Christmas. The hope given to us eternally. The promise of peace and the transformation that only Immanuel could bring as He entered Creation and became incarnate in a little child. The eyes of those men had to look upon the miracle that had been proclaimed to them. This miracle is for us to reflect on as well. God entered creation as a child and lived for each of us so we may fully know the Lord. A pillar leading people day and night did not keep people from straying, but a little child who would grow, teach, and die for us all upon a cross to take upon Himself all of our sin has accomplished for us what we are unable to do. He has given us salvation and freed us from sin. A promise given to us by our Lord in the fullness of His love, so we may fully come to Him and know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
