Luke 9:57

And as they were going along the road, someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.”

Luke 9:57, LSB

We live in a world that worries about feelings. Most people don’t want to say something that will offend or hurt another’s feelings and we don’t like our feelings to be hurt. This may make this encounter with Jesus most troubling because we find someone who says they are eager to follow Jesus, but when not quickly affirmed and welcomed onto the team he walks away discouraged. It wasn’t that Jesus didn’t want this man to know the Gospel, but the man did seem to have wanted the Gospel to be on his terms and when confronted with reality he was disappointed. How often have we seen people who seem to be engaged in the faith doing the work in the church leave because something happens that they don’t like? Christian faith and following Jesus are not meant to be on our own terms but to be centered on the Word and God. We walk in the glory of the uniqueness of our God as we see and follow each person of the Trinity in their Oneness. If a person wishes to deny God because they disagree with something in the Word, we cannot force them to believe but pray that the Holy Spirit opens the truth to them and reveals God in His fullness. Following God is not a simple path but can leave us feeling removed from the things of this world as our Lord calls us to Himself. We are all called to let go, let God, and live in His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
