“Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, you survivors of the nations! They have no knowledge who carry about their wooden idols, and keep on praying to a god that cannot save.”
Isaiah 45:20, ESV
From where does your hope come? For those who don’t believe and trust in God, they create gods for themselves. In ancient times, they were often carved from wood. We may not have the same wooden idols that were common, but people place their faith in objects and things that cannot save. Our calling, as followers of Christ, is to proclaim His glory and be careful not to fall prey to the idols of the world that surround us. Our Lord desires for us to keep our eyes fixed on Him and seek to do all that He has prepared for us to do. Our hearts, sadly, are rebellious in nature and are easily deceived. We can become caught up in some of the glitz and the glamour that surrounds the ceremonies that are practiced around the idols. The bells and the whistles that excite our minds and draw us in. The prayers for the fulfillment of our desires and our wishes that we believe will satisfy our hearts to these idols of our world will eventually falter, but our God, the one true God, never leaves the side of those whom He has chosen, and He calls us into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
