But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.
1 Timothy 6:6–7, ESV
Everything of this world decays and fades away. Names that once had great meaning are lost over time. The only eternal things are the things of God. To be content in the things provided by our Lord does not stop us from striving to do greater kingdom work, but changes our focus. Instead of finding satisfaction in the material, seek satisfaction in the spiritual as life’s pursuits focus more on shining out Christ’s light into a darkening world and less upon earning the adoration of those who seek after that which will one day be dust. Our value is not determined by how much we can produce in the world, but by the intrinsic value given to us as those made in the image of God. Once we pass from this mortal coil, the worldly advances matter little compared to the impact we have upon the spiritual lives of our neighbors and how we build community around us. As we find contentment in the things of God, we do not become more lackadaisical but more invested in the lives of others instead of only our own. In this, our Lord leads us all into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
