Then He said, “Take now your son, your only one, whom you love, Isaac, and go forth to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.”
Genesis 22:2, LSB
Imagine being Abraham at this moment. God is calling him to take his long-awaited son Isaac to offer up as a sacrifice. This was not an uncommon practice of other religions in the region. Isaac was the son of promise. A part of him may have wondered, “Why not Ishmael the son I was forced to send away?” God specified to him, Isaac. Faithfully he went. I can’t imagine he did this hurriedly. For those of us who know this story are aware of God’s message and providence. We know that God would never ask us to sacrifice a child, but we do know that this was a symbol of the act that He would do for His creation through His only Son, Jesus. It would be millennia before this would come to fruition, but it is from this line the Son of God would be born. Abraham was not a perfect man, it wasn’t as though he always made good choices or correct decisions, but he was faithful. In this way, we are also to be faithful. God calls us to not hold back anything from Him. Faithfulness is trusting in His providence and living within His promises. Unlike the world, our God calls us to be content and understand His blessings are all around us instead of the “what have you done for me lately?” mentality that is common in our world. He wants us to know that where He leads us is where we need to be and know that, as long as we are faithful, He will always provide what we need even though it may not be what we want. In Him, we are to find our peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
