This matches my earnest expectation and hope that I will in no way be put to shame, but with all boldness, as always, so even now, Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.
Philippians 1:20, EHV
Understanding God’s providence is important in the Christian life. God will not put His Church or His people to shame. We are called to live bold lives that place all trust in Him and seek to shine out His glory in everything He calls us to do. When we faithfully execute His calling for us, we can trust He will faithfully provide for our needs. God uses us and that is all of us who are His Church in a variety of ways and if each person is faithful in doing what God places in his or her heart to do, we will see something more miraculous than we could ever imagine. Our lives are not to be lived in fear of anything the world can put out there. Death has no power over the Christian life because our lives are secure in Him. As Paul spoke about his body magnifying in Christ in life or death, he wasn’t speaking in hyperbole. In life or in death, we are created to glorify Christ because we are His. In believing the promises of Christ, we know nothing can separate us from Him as we cry out to Him. If someone threatens our lives, so what? God can protect us from anything that can be done to us and, if it costs us our lives, we have eternal life awaiting us. Now this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be thoughtful and reckless with our lives either. As we stand fast in the faith, we stand fast in our confession, and in our confession, we proclaim the promises of Christ and His glory to all who hear. Let these be the first words that come from our lips when we arise and before we close our eyes to sleep as we seek to live in the full glory of our Lord’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
