Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 4:7, ESV
An old excuse for bad behavior is, “The devil made me do it!” The reality for the follower of Christ is that when we live for Christ and are regularly in the Word, there is protection given for us to resist all temptations. When submitted to God, our resistance to temptation is a powerful weapon that the devil cannot withstand. We mustn’t flee because the devil will flee from that which is holy. Our submission to God is our shield as we walk in His guidance and protection. The devil can make no one do anything, but temptation can lead us down dark paths and allow for the possession of one’s will and life. We see throughout Scripture those demon-possessed cry out when Christ was near to them and how, with a word, the affliction was cast out of the person. The devil has no power over Christ, and he cannot overpower the Christian soul. As we surrender ourselves to Christ, we find our Lord’s protection and live in His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
