Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,
Ephesians 5:25–26, LSB
Paul understood this reality about marriage, husbands and wives are set apart in a unique relationship that is reflective of how we are to live our lives to God’s glory. A strong marriage proclaims Jesus because the idea of submission is best grounded in a husband who is submissive to Christ and seeks to be Christ in His home, beginning with His wife. The wife, like the Church, is called to be submissive to her husband as Christ in the home, ultimately to show the children the relationship we are to have with Christ as well as to show how we are loved by our Lord and Savior who provides and cares for us in the example of a husband and father who provides and cares for his family. The interplay of the marriage relationship is vital to the faith of the people, and when that relationship is distorted, we see what we see in the world. The marital bed is defamed and the world is disordered, but Christ does not give up on us as He calls us to Himself and seeks to reorder our lives to live in the light and peace of our Father in Heaven and enter into His glorious kingdom.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
