But the one who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because it does not proceed from faith. Everything that does not proceed from faith is sin.
Romans 14:23, EHV
As followers of Christ, sin is powerless against us, but that does not mean that temptation and sin won’t attempt to ensnare us. Guilt, shame, anxiety, etc., are the devil's weapons, and he likes to wield them against us. The reality of our salvation is in the hands of our Lord, but when the seeds of doubt are sown in our souls, we may begin to forget on whom we depend. Like Adam and Eve in the garden, sin causes us to run and hide from God. Prior to the deception of the serpent, Adam and Eve walked with God and spoke to Him as one would a friend or a parent. Once the deceiver’s voice gets in your head, his words rattle around and cause us to forget the forgiveness we have received. God does not want us to doubt His promises or be bound up in the lies of sin, and He continues to call us to Him. Like the meats from the market that may have been sacrificed to other gods, the sin was not eating the meat but the state of the heart of the person consuming it. There are things in this world that may not be sinful in and of themselves, but if done with fear that God would be displeased is where the sin creeps in and, from this, our Lord calls us away. If our hearts say something is wrong, but Scripture is not clear if it is sin or not, then we should refrain and listen to the spirit God has placed upon us and find His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
