For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
Romans 12:3, ESV
Pride is a dangerous thing. It can make us arrogant and puffed up, believing we have all the answers and the only correct understanding of God and His word. Yet, our Lord calls us to humility and love. We are to share His word and the promises given in it, and our calling is to invite others into His saving grace. There will be those who will not choose God, but the question isn’t whether or not they made a decision, but whether they were called by God. If a person comes to Christ, we are not the ones who create the faith within them, but the Holy Spirit who is calling them. We can neither become too prideful of our witness, believing we are the ones bringing another to the faith, but we know that it is God who is the giver of faith. We are simply called to faithfulness and be prepared to share our faith with all who God places in our lives. Like Phillip, we may find ourselves seeing many come to faith and then be brought to a deserted highway where we may share the faith with only one. Like the starfish on the beach and the boy throwing them back only to have them wash up on the shore again, so it is when we share the faith; it matters only to the one before us that we may lead them into Christ’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
