“No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.”
John 15:15, LSB
Jesus does not just place a claim on us as one who has purchased us as His slave, but He offers us so much more. That happy exchange on the Cross wasn’t just a way for our Lord to gain control of us, but He desires to capture our hearts in friendship. This is not like what we find on social media, where we click on people we may or may not truly know and call them friends, but true abiding friendship. Our Lord desires a special intimacy that comes with being friends as a confidant and someone you can truly rely on. Sometimes, we banter around the word friend too easily and allow ourselves to be open to the wrong people, but a true friend will never betray your trust or confidence. This is the friendship that our Lord Jesus Christ offers to us as He has revealed to us His Father and the desire of our God to bring us to Himself. Through Jesus Christ, we are friends with the King and heirs to the kingdom. The relationship we are called to hold with our Lord is beyond anything we can fully comprehend in this world because it is a relationship that is grounded outside of sin. Not because we are at this time sinless, but in eternity our sins will be fully removed and cast far away from us and we will truly know our Lord’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
