“But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.”

Revelation 2:4, LSB

These words of Jesus to the Church in Ephesus are given after He gave a great litany of all the good things that they had done. How often do we become less enchanted in our faith journey and lose sight of our purpose for the things we do as followers of Christ? It is easy to become stuck in a rut in our faith walk and do things more out of habit than out of faith. God calls us out of this and desires for our fires of love for Him to be reignited regularly. A cooled love with our Lord is as unhealthy as a cooled love within a marriage. Our Lord desires to remain the first love in our lives, and that love is meant to season all aspects of our lives. Just as Jesus warned Ephesus, so He warns us to refocus our love and not let our faith become an object of the past in our lives but forever in the forefront of who we are as His people, so we may be a light to others and be a beacon to the world of His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
