Now it happened in those days, that Moses had grown up. And he went out to his brothers and looked on their hard labors. And he saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers.
Exodus 2:11, LSB
Moses was raised as Pharoah’s grandson, but his mother was able to raise him as a servant of Pharoah’s daughter to make him aware of who his people were. Though he was given an education of an Egyptian, he knew his ancestry and when he saw the oppression of the Israelites, his heart was stirred to anger. In a rash decision, Moses struck and killed an Egyptian beating on an Israelite and, in fear after being called out the next day by another Israelite, he fled. He left behind comfort in the Pharoah’s house because his heart was tied to his people. When we see the oppression of brothers and sisters in Christ, our Lord desires us to seek their relief and pray for their protection. We are not called to act rashly, but God will forgive us of our humanness and call us to move in different directions. This does not excuse our rashness but does not preclude us from doing good. God placed Moses where he was to bring relief to His chosen people. It wasn’t that God approved of Moses taking the life of the Egyptian it may have made the work God set Moses apart to do even more difficult. God still used Moses with his imperfections to lead His people to their promised land. God uses imperfect and broken people to do His will. He desires for us to seek justice for all people and, like Moses, lead people to the promise fulfilled in Christ our Lord and, in Him, find our peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
