John 16:7–11

“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.”

John 16:7–11, LSB

Jesus had to die so we may live. This is the reality of our faith, as stated by the leader of the Sanhedrin, Caiaphas, but he did not understand it as it would play out. In the death of our Lord, He took upon Himself all our sins and sent us the Holy Spirit to guide us in our faith and to reveal to us His will. As we walk in the Holy Spirit, we walk with a spirit of repentance. We walk in the knowledge that we are redeemed. Not through our own actions, but through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The power of sin has been broken. Sadly, there are those who will reject and not receive the Holy Spirit and they will face the full judgment that we all deserve because they are under the lordship of this world and are disciples of death. Our prayer is for our witness to be guided by the Holy Spirit to move hearts to bow to the glory of our Lord and know His forgiveness as they repent and humble themselves in the realization of their guilt. This is the gift of the Holy Spirit, the gift of the promise, and the reality of Christ’s peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
