You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time.
1 Peter 5:5–6, LSB
Arrogance and hubris are two great obstacles to witnessing the Gospel to others. We should never think too highly of ourselves, but seek always to exalt our Lord Jesus Christ. This can be difficult in a world that honors those who are bold in their convictions and willing to go after those who disagree. Now, a bold witness is not a bad thing, but one should have a level of humility and never seek to bring dishonor to another. Paul, when he witnessed to Felix, did not seek to undermine or demean him or his wife, nor did he criticize the people at the Areopagus. His words were humble, yet bold. His witness was given to build up Christ while not placing the focus on himself. We will not convince another through mocking or criticizing their intelligence. We are called to respect our brothers and sisters, giving dignity to our elders and shining Christ’s grace out to those around us. Our calling is not to be lifted on our own, but in God’s grace, and shine the light of His peace into the lives of others.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
