“He must increase, but I must decrease.”
John 3:30, ESV
When I was studying youth ministry, one of my professors described ministry as “Standing before the Cross and yelling for people to ‘Look over here!’ and duck!” It is easy to want to be the center of attention, but the real center in the life of a follower of Christ is our Lord. It’s like the song by Casting Crowns, “Only Jesus,” though the world is often all about leaving a personal mark or legacy, our calling is best defined by all those who have come to Jesus through our witness. It only takes me a minute to remember the faces of those who reflected Christ to me, some I knew very well, and others I didn’t even know their name. Christ knows, and I came to know Christ through them, and that is the only thing that truly matters. God uses us, His followers, in the lives of others, and we may not always know our impact on another’s life. The prayer of our Lord and the message John gave is the reality, in the end, is the eternal gift of salvation that comes from Christ and Christ alone, which leads us to His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
