“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

John 10:10, LSB

Christ is the bringer of life. He does not just bring life, but life in abundance. We know that there is much in this world that desires to rob us of life. Sadly, the thief does not come dressed as one who looks like what we would like to think of as a thief. The thief that desires to steal, kill, and destroy does not look like someone who wishes to bring us harm. The great thief, Satan, and his minions will not look like the images that we often see in paintings and in some pop culture. Lucifer is attractive and will paint all the things that rob us of life as being fun and a way to live it up. In the end, however, all those things leave those who partake empty and weak. Our Lord calls us out of the darkness and into His life that we may walk in life and know it in abundance. We see the suffering and all that comes with living in the world and in the worldly ways and Christ desires for us to be released from suffering and death and know life now and in eternity. It is the blessing that He pours out on us and to lead us away from all things that seek to destroy our lives and give us His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
