Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing from Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same manner.”
John 5:19, LSB
We learn by example. This is what Jesus was teaching His disciples, and it is the lesson we all are meant to learn in our lives, also. As parents, our children will learn habits, good and bad, from us. We are the models for life as they grow. As our children age, they will learn other habits and patterns from others that are regularly in their lives – classmates, church family, neighborhood friends. The power of our example in every avenue of our lives is important. Christ modeled this in His life for His disciples, and we are left with His perfect example and the imperfect examples of the disciples within Scripture. We will never be able to live the perfect example of Christ, but that doesn’t excuse us from seeking to live our lives as close to His as possible. Our sins are forgiven, but we are not excused to seek after sin. Our lives are meant to be living sacrifices that shine out Christ and His light to those in the darkness and live our lives to the glory of the Father. Christ set us free so we may help others to know Him and lead us all into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
