Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.”
Luke 3:14, ESV
Contentment is our Lord’s desire for us. This has always been true, but discontent and the covetous nature of our hearts have plagued humanity since the Fall. A covetous heart is murderous. It is what drove Cain against his brother, Abel. It drives much of the violence we see in the world today. The thirst for more is never satiated with a covetous heart. It is like drinking the ocean; it never satisfies the thirst but will kill you eventually. We see people lose hope because of the discontent in their hearts as they do not achieve what they think is the height of success. It is the heart of a person given a longer life, but unhappy because there are still things that are not right within their bodies. “If only” is the motto of discontent and stands as an accusation against God. Jesus’ words to the soldiers ring true in our ears because we all struggle with some level of discontent, but our Lord calls us away from this as He calls us into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
