For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.
Romans 8:7, ESV
We should not be surprised at the cruelty and inhumanity we see in the world because we live not in a world subject to God, but most people are subject to their nature, which is opposed to God. When left to our own devices and set free to follow our natural desires, we are not able to know or follow God and His Law. Of course, there is natural law written in the hearts of all humanity, but we see how malleable it is when anything that fits within a framework created to suit the desires of a large group can justify almost any horrific act. A natural mind cannot comprehend the Law of God, nor will it understand the offensiveness of their actions. It is the Holy Spirit who opens hearts and minds, diverts us from following our natural nature, leads us into the paths our Lord guides, draws us closer to the Father’s will, leads us to know forgiveness, and fills us with our Lord’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
